Model study of rock foundation problems underneath concrete gravity dam
Combination of photoelastic and resistance-gage methods was used in study on dam and its foundation; models were prepared from materials with mechanical and rheological characteristics similar to those of prototype; birefringent coating on one side of model permitted immediate determination of stress-concentration location, and of principal-stress direction; magnitude of stress for critical stress zones was determined by means of resistance gages attached to rear side of model; by use of above procedure, work required for obtaining information from electrical gages was considerably reduced.
