Behaviour of reinforcing steels at elevated temperatures
Investigations were carried out into tensile properties of low and medium carbon reinforcing steels in their "as rolled" and "cold worked" conditions over range of temperatures which could be expected to occur during fire, to determine whether increased concrete cover was warranted in structures reinforced with cold worked steels; performance of hot rolled and cold worked steels was found to be very similar and did not justify contemplated distinction between two types of reinforcement; tests carried out on steel bars subjected to constant load in which temperature was raised at rate simulating actual fire conditions indicated that "critical" temperature was lower than expected from tests on reinforced concrete members.
