Likelihood of rupture of reinforcing steels in concrete and prestressed concrete structures is evaluated mostly on basis of literature data; it is concluded that statistics show that scatter in strength of steels constitutes no danger; defects introduced during processing of steels or in service, for instance by welding, exposure to corrosive agents, or notching, may lead to failure; sensitivity of steels to such damage varies; testing methods are discussed.
