Surface cracking of mass concrete structures at early form removal
Based on rheological model, with deformational behavior similar to that of concrete, equation was derived which relates cracking of concrete to rate of deformation, tensile strength of concrete, deformational properties of concrete, and time; approximate calculation revealed serious risk of surface cracks due to temperature gradients if forms are removed too early at low temperatures from newly cast mass concrete structures; however, results of field tests showed that these surface cracks are so shallow that they are of no practical importance.
