Formulas for flow pattern followed by seaward-moving fresh groundwater as it nears beach; under steady flow conditions, sharply defined interface is formed between fresh and salt water; fresh water escapes through gap between this interface and shoreline; tidal action causes diffusion of salt water across interface which is carried back to sea with fresh-water flow.
