Steel-shell piles for unusual foundation
Open end piles driven 105 ft through muck and sand to hardpan and cleaned out by washing and blowing with air jet, were employed to provide support for 1300-ton coal unloading dock; piles for minor structures were driven only part way through sand stratum over soft clay and additional bearing, where required, was obtained by using more piles rather than extending their length.
