New foundations provided for Nineteenth Century Cathedral
Investigation of foundations of St Josephs Cathedral in Hartford, showed that foundations consisted of stone footings bearing on clay of varying consistencies, softest having appearance of ordinary toothpaste; to this stratum footings were applying loads varying from 3 to 9 tons per sq ft; details of provision of new foundation in form of pretested underpinning and explains care taken to avoid disintegration of badly cracked masonry walls.
