Performance of columns made with lightweight-aggregate concrete was compared with that of similar columns made with gravel aggregate concrete of same cube strength; 7-sq in. columns were reinforced longitudinally; two types of lightweight aggregate, sintered pulverized-fuel ash and expanded clay were used; height/width ratios were 10 and 30 and eccentricities of load were zero and 1 in.; for short columns ultimate loadbearing capacities of lightweight and gravel-concrete columns were equal but for long columns that of lightweight-concrete columns was substantially less.
