Better roof support enhances safety
Research in roof-control methods led to better roof support at lower cost and prevention of roof falls in problem areas at U S Steel's Robena mine, Greene County, Pa; roof support procedures call for installation of 6-, 8-ft 3/4-in. high-strength bolts in place of shorter 5/8-in. units; other major items in roof-control program include use of sag bolts to measure accurately roof sag, research in resin-anchored bolts and application of compression pads and hydraulic cells to study bolt loading; roof-control committee investigates roof failures in bolted areas, determines causes of failures and recommends ways of improving roof control.
