Rock movements are outcome of reestablishment of state of balance following disturbance in stress distribution in coal deposits caused by mining operations; rock movements in immediate vicinity of face have been studied with regard to roof control and effect of rock pressures on coal getting; effect of galleries on rock pressure at coal face and effect of operations at coal face on subsidence at surface; rock pressure around mine shafts; contribution of rock pressure to coal getting by widening cleat; rock pressures act by expansion thrust which arises from relief ahead of face, by relative creep of surrounding strata and by reaction they produce on seam; these three actions depend on strata conditions, depth and thickness of seam, cleats and numerous clearly marked joints, and also on way in which work is conducted, direction of face, roof control, and rate of progress.
