Environmental physiology of shelter habitation
Winter and summer shelter habitability trials of two weeks duration were conducted on grounds of National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md; 100 shelter occupants were in each trial; detailed studies were made of physical surroundings and of biological characteristics of occupants; various physiological parameters indicated that there were significant degrees of strain during summer trial; it is evident that water allowance based on coefficients of heat loss calculated from dry-bulb temperature only will underestimate water needs under conditions such as those which existed during summer trial.
