A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Two basic formulations for expansive cement have been developed in United States; one designed to expand and compensate for shrinkage which occurs in portland cement concrete as it hardens is called "shrinkage-compensated cement"; other known as "self-stressing cement" is designed to create greater expansion in concrete when it hardens, which will prestress high-tensile imbedded in concrete; former eliminates shrinkage cracks in concrete while latter produces concrete that prestresses itself; expansive component is calcium aluminosulfate whose clinker when blended with that of portland cement produces expansive cement; when mixed with conventional aggregates and water it produces expansive concretes.
