Express highway bridge over Rhine at Leverkusen
Planning, competitive bidding, and its results; bridge consists of 469-m left bank approach, 492-m three-span suspension bridge with two pylons and skew guy-rope system, and 97-m right bank approach; projects chosen from among 70 bids submitted are shown and their particular features are discussed; bridge rests on two reinforced concrete river piers and four foreland piers; pier foundations were constructed using sheet pile cofferdams, Prepakt underwater concreting method, as well as soil-consolidating injections of cement-bentonite gel and chemical compounds.
