Metallizing of structural steelwork in pamban railway bridge
Steelwork of girders in Pamban railroad bridge, connecting Indian mainland with Rameswaram island across Palk Strait, is subject to heaviest degree of corrosion, due to extremely saline atmosphere and spraying of seawater by waves and heavy winds; metallizing or spraying girders with aluminum or zinc was tried as protection against corrosion; data indicate that metallizing significantly reduces cost of maintenance of girders at this bridge; frequency of regirdering, involving interruption to through-traffic and additional losses on this account, is also decreased.
