Steel bridge girders with prestressed composite tension flanges
Two steel delta girders, with prestressing strands embedded in concrete along their tension flanges, span 150 ft to carry 28-ft precast-slab deck for bridge in northwest Washington, near Bellingham; delta top has flange 42 in. wide; at outside edges of 24-in.wide bottom flange, 6×4-in. angles are turned up and in to form box to hold concrete around 36 tensioning strands of 1/2-in. diam; girders were fabricated in steel shop, then moved to concrete prestressing plant for tendons and concrete protection; precast deck slabs, 9×28 ft and 7 in. thick, have eight openings through them over each girder for welded-on studs; slabs are held 1 in. above steel while concrete is placed through openings around studs to support slabs and provide for shear.
