Study of polysulfide sealants for joints in bridges
It is shown that polysulfide sealants used in expansion joints of bridge decks are actually viscoelastic and exhibit interrelated phenomena of creep and stress relaxation; curves are included for modulus of elasticity, creep, and stress relaxation, with shape factor, Shore hardness and temperature as parameters; sample solutions are shown for stresses in sealants under various loading conditions, including tension plus shear and compression plus shear; stress relaxation equation is derived using curve-fitting technique and stress relaxation relationship is verified by standard laboratory methods and by method of photoelasticity.
