Glued joints speed bridge construction
Choisy-le-Rio bridge, crossing Seine near Paris, is built on principle of free-span method in which successive sections of concrete deck beam are built and progressively prestressed symmetrically outward as cantilevers from bridge piers without use of centering; precast voussoirs 8 ft long, 2 in. deep, 12 ft wide weighing 20 tons were loaded on barges and hoisted into position by floating crane; special travelling rig rolling inside box beams to position voussoirs is rolled back into completed structure to hold new section in place for application of 1/32 in. thick bond of epoxy resin and then retracted to complete joint; properties of epoxy resin joints between concrete components were tested.
