Reducing shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete beams and slabs
Shear tests reported were carried out in Stuttgart, West Germany from 1961 to 1963; mechanism of failure at ultimate shear load is explained in terms of truss analogy, and ratio between width of compression flange and thickness of web is shown to have considerable influence on inclination of top chord and of diagonal struts of truss and, consequently, on tensile forces in web; from results, simple method for reducing shear reinforcement is derived; for short beams with slenderness ratio less than eight or for concentrated loads close to supports, further reduction in shear coverage is possible; tests showed that stirrups are preferable to bent-up bars for shear reinforcement, particularly if high-tensile steel is used.
