Damping of vibrations in prestressed concrete
Laboratory and field tests carried out at Technical University of Norway, Trondheim, to investigate damping of vibrations in prestressed concrete beams and bridges are described; laboratory tests were performed on eight beams, 15×10 cm in cross section and about 4 m in length; damping was investigated in frequency range extending from 2 to 11 cps; characteristic logarithmic decrements observed in laboratory tests on pressure-grouted beams varied from 6 to 2% at dynamic stresses which ranged from 60 to 1 kg/sq cm; damping in nongrouted beams was higher than in grouted beams; damping increased with increase in cube strength of concrete, and decreased as amount of prestress became greater.
