Over bridge, over fills -- Runway built to stay smooth
Solution of problem associated with extending runway across new underpass, without bumps such as occur at highway bridge ends at Buffalo, NY, International Airport; shoulder of reinforced concrete rigid frame which overpasses tracks is notched to form recessed shelf; resting on this shelf, and butting against vertical edge of notch, is heavy reinforced 19-in. deep structural slab, 150 ft wide and 24 ft long; details of reinforced, keyed approach slab design used at bridge ends; hinged sheets of welded wire fabric expedited job and saved labor.
