Construction of dam on Columbia River, with 831,250 kw of installed power includes cutoff through pervious gravel to rock made by slurry-trench method, and zone grouting by use of double packers in line to make deep section watertight; river closure was made by dumping big rock, then filling with pervious material and consolidating by vibroflotation; post-tensioned cables, concreted in deep holes under upstream end of spillway piers and future intake units, resist uplift and save concrete; 12 Tainter gates, 50×65 ft high, highest ever built, are made practical by post-tensioning anchorages for trunnions.
