Several recent failures of dams and resultant damage by flooding are noted; causes of different types of failure are reviewed and brief histories given of examples chosen; effects of reservoirs on balance of nature are mentioned, design of dams is considered and suggestions advanced for protection of persons and property; question of insurance against damage; it is concluded that every dam which impounds water presents potential danger. (See also Instn Civ Engrs -- Proc v 24 Jan 1963 p 47-60)
