Rotation of reinforced concrete plastic hinges at ultimate load
On basis of simplified ultimate load theory, procedure for checking required rotations caused by moment redistribution and rotation capacities of plastic hinges is outlined, and influences of strength of concrete, compression and tension reinforcement, and form of loading on hinge rotations discussed; it is shown that compression steel provides convenient means of adjusting deformations in ultimate load design; on basis of test results from 54 beams and 13 struts, recommendations in published report on "Ultimate load design of concrete structures" for computing of plastic hinge rotations are shown to be safe and statistically acceptable.
