Drilled-in caissons were combined with Pretest tiebacks in protective shoring structure to safeguard 9-story building bordering side-hill excavation 46 ft deep in Syracuse, NY; rock strata were so unstable that it was impracticable to drive steel sheet piling or H-section soldier beams; caissons, spaced 14 ft 6 in. on centers, and 24-in. in OD with 3/8-in. wall, were installed in holes 24-in. in diam, predrilled by rotary method.
