Skopje earthquake damage
Earthquake of July 26 1963, in Skopje, Yugoslavia, emphasized that multistory unreinforced masonry wall-bearing structures without ties between walls and floors are unsuitable in seismic zones; buildings with reinforced concrete frames without shear walls experienced nonstructural damage, and those with shear walls or concrete cores, when properly built, showed little or no structural damage. (see also similar unsigned article in Eng News-Rec v 171 n 17 Oct 16 1963 p 36-8)
