Sunshine bridge cantilevers over Mississippi
Construction of Sunshine Bridge over Mississippi River at Donaldsonville, La, features use of open caissons for deep-water construction and erection of structural steel from water level by use of long-boom barge derricks instead of working on top of trusses; river portion of 8277-ft long bridge contains 5-span, double cantilever truss and one 350-ft deck truss; central span is 825-ft long and is flanked by 2 800-ft spans, each of which contains one 400-ft suspended span and 2 450-ft anchor spans; substructure and caisson sinking operations described.
