Steel arch all welded Kawarau bridge has total length of 390 ft and carries 2-lane highway with capacity of 32 tons in each lane; unusual design feature of new road bridge over Mohaka River Gorge is use of "vertical curve" principle in which center of span is lower than ends; bridge carries 2-lane 24-ft wide roadway; of 5 spans, center span is 270 ft and side spans 189 ft, designed as steel deck truss principle; there are 2 short rolled steel joist approach spans.
