Neat bridge job saves six months in year
Construction techniques of 2.4 mi long bridge across Oregon Inlet on North Carolina's outer banks; bridge, mainly of concrete, has 204 spans totaling 12,865 ft overall; its 33 ft 3 in. wide deck comprises 28 ft clear roadway with 1 ft, 7 1/2 in. wheel guard and 12 in. wide parapet wall on either side; deck is of cast-in-place reinforced concrete 7 1/4 in. thick; formwork was designed to couple strength with fast, simple erection and stripping.
