Hydraulics operate bascule span
Features of hydraulically operated, highway bridge draw span; bridge over North River in Plymouth County, Mass, has 40 ft long, 31 ft wide bascule span that weighs 80,000 lb and has 250,000 lb counterweight; 2 8-in. diam double-acting hydraulic cylinders, one on each side of roadway, raise and lower span; each cylinder has 16 ft stroke and they can raise span maximum of 82° from horizontal; 5 hp, 500 psi hydraulic pump driven by electric motor actuates cylinders.
