Aluminium bascule bridge needs no counterbalance
Counterweight was eliminated by using aluminum for bridge structure and resins to form roadway surface; designed for Brit Waterways, bridge consists of 40-ft 6-in. dw lift movable span carrying busy single lane roadway over canal lock at Gloucester; movable span weighs about 7 tons; structure is simple trapezoidal truss made up from standard aluminum sections; lengths of special extruded plank section with integral stiffening flanges form decking; fluted top surface is intended to act as key for roadway surface; electrohydraulic ram operated system raises bridge in about 1 min.
