Residual stress distribution in various I-sections was experimentally investigated; magnitude of residual stresses caused by cooling is considerable; they reach as much as 60% of yield stress and their influence on column strength may be significant; stub column tests were carried out, and experimental stress-strain curves compared with theoretical ones, latter taking into account measured residual stress distributions by means of suitable analytical function; reduction of Shanley load for straight, pin-ended column was found to be between 25 and 41%, considering buckling about minor axis of I-sections.
