Engineering of saarinen's arch
Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Mo, with basic shape from inverted catenary curve, has triangular section and height and width of 630 ft; principal transportation is 8-capsule (car) train following curved hatchway to observation platform, and elevators rising to height of 370 ft in each leg of arch; walls are double-skin, filled with concrete to height of 300 ft; outer skin is 1/4 in. stainless steel plate, and inner skin is type A-7 carbon steel; sway of arch at crown is calculated about 18 in, with design wind load of 155 mph.
