H.M.S. Vernon: Rebuilding shore establishment; site examination and subsequent piling
Settlement of buildings east of Portsmouth harbor necessitated investigation of geological conditions of site by test borings before pile foundation for new shore establishment was chosen; piles consist of concrete shells, 3 ft long, 17 1/2 in. in external diam and 12 in. in internal diam; driving resistances were calculated from Hiley formula.
