Fibre tubes slash concrete slab costs
8-in. diam tubes of heavy asphalt duplex paper covered with wax and called Sonovoids, are placed on top of reinforcing steel, tied by wire directly to form work, and concrete poured over top to form floor slab; 20% reduction effected in weight of slab; slab is thicker than normal and thereby vibrations are reduced; air space within tubes improves acoustical and thermal insulation; heating and ventilating ducts easily placed in slab; drawback is that tubes have to be tied down against floating in concrete paste.
