Release of alkalies by sands and admixtures in Portland cement mortars
Test in which 1 by 1 by 11 1/4 in. mortar bars are leached with water, was used to study ability of admixtures and aggregates to release alkalies to liquid phase of hardened cement paste and also ability of admixtures to combine with alkalies in mortar; it appears that certain admixtures and aggregates might release alkalies in sufficient quantities to produce expansions in concrete if aggregate also contains minerals which would react with alkalies.
