Findings on second narrows bridge collapse at Vancouver
Cause of collapse of two spans of double tier steel beam grillage construction of six-lane steel truss highway bridge was instability of webs of stringer beams serving as upper tier of falsework grillage supporting anchor span at its fourth panel point; instability was due to omission of stiffeners and effective diaphragming in grillage, and this in turn was basically due to error in calculations.
