Bridge approaches on four freeways in Los Angeles area were investigated; 40% of structure on piles and 38% of those on spread footings had approach patching; approach patching generally was not needed until two or three years after road was opened to traffic; causes of irregularities are use of poor natural material in fill, poor structure of fill, steep rocky bank, and differential settlement.
