High resistance of deformable tunnel lining consisting of joint-connected sections to varying roof pressures occurring particularly in cohesive rock was confirmed by photoelastic model investigation; effect of number and position of joints on stress distribution was examined; recommendations based on actual experience are given with regard to joint and seal design for cases of concrete and steel-concrete lining sections.
