A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Demonstrating considerable foresight, early political leaders of United States realized importance of maps for orderly development of country; they established and defined objectives of four federal mapping agencies -- General Land Office, Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, Coast and Geodetic Survey, and Geological Survey; scope of project provided tremendous challenges to pioneer surveyors; immensity of area to be mapped, difficulties and dangers in exploring almost uninhabited wilderness, and shortage of trained men and adequate instruments; organization, methods, and accomplishments of these agencies -- and men who comprised them -- are described.
