These jetties must be designed as slope jetties for low tide, vertical breakwaters for high tide, and composite type jetties for in-between water levels; review is made of various formulas for calculating "ram" effects and "slap" effects exerted by breaking waves; new method based on theorem of quantity of motion is proposed for their evaluation; three dimensionless expressions are derived and their numerical values are calculated for ten existing jetties; by assigning optimum values to these expressions, some basic dimensions can be calculated for new jetties by means of comparison with existing ones.
