Energy dissipation in vortex shaft
Vortex shaft designed for bypass system across one or more power units, with suitable energy-dissipation arrangements, features spiral chamber and its supply canal, vertical shaft, and elbow at bottom of shaft; various flow relationships were checked on model shaft 25 cm in diam, with varying wall roughness; residual energy in flow is absorbed at foot of shaft by cushion of water, depth of which is determined by elbow connecting shaft to tailrace. (In French with English summary)
