Effect of roughness of footings on bearing capacity
Bearing power of soil depends on shape, size and depth of foundation and properties of soil; effect of roughness of footings on ultimate bearing capacity; laboratory tests were performed on 1×1 in., 1 1/2×1 1/2 in., 2×2 in. and on 2 in. diam circular model footings with smooth and rough bases; all footings were placed on surface of dry and uniform sand well compacted in tank of 18×18×12 in. size; vertical loads applied to footings in small increments until failure and each increment was maintained until settlement of footings was complete; results indicated that ultimate bearing capacity of rough footing was more than that of smooth footing of same size and shape.
