Failures of bulkhead and excavation bracing
Failures seldom are result of simple miscalculation of earth pressure; instead, they are caused by neglect of backfill loads, construction operations that produce earth pressure, poor support systems, inadequate allowance for deflection, corrosion, and poor design and construction details; adequate attention to overall soil structure system behavior as well as detailed analysis of earth pressure are essential to avoid failures and to provide economical design and construction; time and materials short cuts on construction, especially in placing bracing, frequently prove disastrous; failures on old structures frequently occur from loading beyond point provided for in design.
