Precast components make up over 80% of Saratov Dam on Volga River; dam is 6890 ft long, with concrete power section flanked by earthfill embankments; 151-ft-high concrete section is built on 13-ft-thick, cast-in-place foundation slab that rests on stiff clay; principal element used to build pier is box-shaped slab of pier width, 49.2 ft high and 8.2 ft square.
