Ice core for pervious earth dam 350 miles North of Arctic circle
To supply domestic water for 1600 persons in Barrow, Alaska, earthfill dam was built with pervious sand and gravel; impervious core of ice then formed in sand and gravel to retain satisfactorily shallow lagoon; no rock was available so empty oil drums and surplus landing mats were used for riprap protection against wave action; construction was done by cutting out ice in winter, setting oil drums, and hauling in fill with carrying scrapers; work was done largely by, and for, Eskimos at one of farthest settlements of north.
