Spillway and outlet works Shelbyville dam, Kaskaskia river, Illinois
Tests were conducted on 1 to 40 scale model reproducing spillway for Shelbyville Dam, combination concrete and earth structure rising 108 ft above bed of river; flow conditions in approach, discharge characteristics of spillway, hydrostatic pressures on ogee weir crest, performance of conventional stilling basin, and height of training walls were investigated; satisfactory energy dissipation was obtained with 125 ft long horizontal stilling basin; model indicated that height of stilling basin training walls could be reduced 5 ft.
