Model for compression of elastic-plastic cylinders
Post-buckling behavior of circular thin-walled cylinder under axial load is analyzed with aid of geometric model which takes into account undistorted ends; analysis, which uses variation of total energy to define equilibrium paths, is applicable to cylinders with slenderness ratios (radius to thickness) greater than 100; elastic and elastic-plastic ridge bending stresses assumed to be uncoupled from membrane stress state are taken into account; sensitivity of buckling loads to imperfections with proposed correlation with post-buckling modes is indicated.
