Forces acting on barrel of rigid culvert may depend on construction method, presence of organic material, material of earth's crust, fill properties, and culvert geometries; these features are accounted for by finite-element method for obtaining approximate solutions to plane problems of linear elasticity; analytical results for two conditions of earth's crust, various fill properties and for hay block diliberately placed over crown of culvert are compared with recorded pressures; for proper description of material properties, in particular fill to hay modular ratio, accurate distribution of barrel pressure may be obtained.
