Improvements on safety of foundations of concrete dams

Foundation rocks of concrete dams occasionally present important problems to designers; among them is resistance to sliding along certain weak planes, sudden or progressive settlements, large deformations and effects of seepage of reservoir water; large deformations or low moduli of elasticity of foundations give rise in certain instances to tensile stresses in concrete near foundations; these have been successfully resisted by means of steel reinforcements placed inside concrete in convenient locations and directions; feasibility of solving problems of rock masses gives high technological interest to this type of structure; instances presented indicate means employed in each case.
