Engineering and physico-chemical properties affecting piping failure of low loess dams in negev
Study to develop design criteria for use of loess in small-dam construction; movement observations at points within newly constructed dams were made over period of 3 yr to determine effect of consolidation and heave on piping resistance of dams; movements observed were rather small and did not yield conclusive results; cation exchange complex of 10 sound and failed dams and of paired dams whose soil texture, foundation and construction techniques were similar, indicated strong relationship between physicochemical properties of loess and incidence of failure.
